The kitchen at the centre of home architecture

Poggenpohl presents the new +ARTESIO kitchen concept

New thinking has a tradition at Poggenpohl. At the “Eurocucina Furniture Exhibition in Milan (14 to 19 April 2010), German kitchen manufacturer Poggenpohl has presented +ARTESIO, a completely new concept designed in collaboration with Hamburg-based star architect and designer Hadi Teherani. Going far beyond the fitted kitchen typically found in the industry, it provides an all embracing solution in an architectural melting pot fusing furniture design, wall, floor and ceiling.

Poggenpohl established the trend towards the open kitchen many years ago. Looking back, the first step can be seen as the cooking island presented by the company as long ago as 1967 and today the most taken for granted. Featuring different kitchen concepts, multifunctional tables and shelf systems, the years that followed were to produce solutions that all felll under the banner: “The kitchen is moving out of the home.”

+ARTESIO resolutely continues this philosophy and even goes several steps further. Together with Hamburg architect and designer Hadi Teherani, an all embracing concept was developed in which the aspects of building, architecture, home living and kitchen all coalesce. Bearing the typical Teherani signature, the result is a solution that builds a visual bridge between cooking and living.

Doing so – and this is also unique and innovative – the concept embraces all three dimensions: from the floor and walls right through to the ceiling. The latter is visually defined by a function arch with its innovative ceiling that integrates all the elements necessary for lighting, ventilation and sound. This produces an entirely new feeling of space that is inviting and turns the kitchen into the centre of living at home.

Providing  the organisational basis for the new kitchen, a design grid of 130 mm brings together louvred wall and base unit in horizontally linear fashion. The uniform style is based on a newly developed carcase that permits identical front and side sections – a unique innovation in kitchen design. And, as a design element, the stainless-steel band that also extends right the way round the reveal-accentuated structure of the walls with their exquisite wooden surfaces underscores the desired, integrative impression.

In this concept, cooking and eating go hand in hand. As such, a dining table, matching chairs, a corner bench as well as a bench in dark pine are also available from Poggenpohl for the kitchen. The seating’s architectural design reflects the style of the kitchen. Doing so, the horizontally stitched upholstery follows the 130-mm grid of the louvred wall.

With the new +ARTESIO® concept designed in collaboration with Hadi Teherani, planning the kitchen doesn’t begin once the floor plan has been finalised but ideally starts while the architecture of the building or home is being planned. Yet at the same time, the new concept is so flexible, it can also be implemented without a problem in existing kitchen situations. +ARTESIO® will be available from Poggenpohl starting early 2011.

Dining by Design 2010 - Morocco in New York

This year DINING BY DESIGN brings Morocco to Pier 94 with the MMPI and Poggenpohl table designed by interior designer, Harry Daniell. Daniell’s vision blends Poggenpohl’s modern functionality with DINING BY DESIGN’s “over the top” aesthetic. The space features two Poggenpohl Dining Desks in elm veneer. The concept incorporates a layered approach intertwining modernity and extravagance. Staying consistent with Poggenpohl’s high-end brand, the design features table-top items from Bernardaud, Saint-Louis, Puriforcat and the AIDS red-ribbon inspired serving plate by Hermes.

“THERE were many fantastical table settings at the Diffa Dining by

Design benefit exhibition and dinner in Manhattan Monday night,

but the most inventive accessory was a bare-chested young man

who sat, eyes closed and legs crossed, in a yoga pose at the

Poggenpohl for MMPI “Morocco in New York” display. There

were tables and potted trees on either side, and tent-like drapes

behind him.”

(Herford, Germany, October 2009) — In addition to wood colors, white and various shades of grey are still dominant kitchen color schemes. Well known for its ability to spot trends as well as setting them, Poggenpohl is now introducing new colors for its kitchen fronts.

Founded in 1892, Poggenpohl is not only the oldest kitchen brand in the world, but has also always been a trendsetter contributing new ideas for kitchens with its innovative developments and striking design, from the first add-on kitchen (1952) through fitted kitchens (1962) and the first solid wood kitchen (1968) to the luxury kitchen introduced last year and dubbed a “Man’s Kitchen,” the P’7340 developed in collaboration with Porsche Design.

Poggenpohl is introducing colors which have never before been seen in a kitchen. They are deliberately neither “loud” nor “harsh,” yet consciously reflect the current trend towards “more color.” The names of these new colors are derived from the mineral colors on which they are based.

  • Cubanite – a beige tone
  • Oxide – a light blue
  • Fluorite – a modest green
  • and Curite – a fresh coppery orange

All colors are available as melamine coating, melamine with shiny poly-gloss coating, water-based lacquer or high-gloss lacquer. They can be ordered either as a complete kitchen or simply as a “dash of color” on individual kitchen elements.

A particularly cool Polar White, a wood finish in Sand Pine (with or without aluminium edges) as well as a Holm Oak wood veneer round off the new cabinetry selection.

Shelf System

Moreover, Poggenpohl is introducing a new shelf system which continues the design line of the Poggenpohl kitchen and creates a special visual highlight with the new colors, thus ensuring a flowing transition between kitchen and living room. The new shelf system creates a perfect visual and functional link between cooking and living areas. Available in many colors and veneers, as a solitary wall-mounted unit or as a connecting element, it continues the kitchen’s design line into the living area while at the same time creating a separate focus for modern, high-quality living.

The 39 cm high and 30 cm deep shelf elements are available with or without sliding doors. They hang freely on the wall and, like a Poggenpohl kitchen, are characterized by clear lines and a sophisticated mix of materials. The shelf element can also be combined with matching base units.

The new shelf system permits maximum freedom of design not only with regard to its dimensions, but also in terms of the surface finishes available. It is available in standard widths of 90 cm, 120 cm, 180 cm and 240 cm, as well as in variable widths from 60 cm to 260 cm. All top and bottom panels, as well as the side and back panels are available in virtually every Poggenpohl color and material. From laminate through wood veneer to lacquer and high-gloss lacquered finishes, including the latest trend colors cubanite (an elegant beige color), oxide (a light blue), fluorite (a modest green) and curite (a fresh coppery orange). The same also applies for the sliding doors. The number of possible combinations and design variations is infinite.

Poggenpohl is the world’s leading luxury kitchen cabinet brand with 13 showrooms and 20 dealers across the United States. Established in 1892, Poggenpohl is the world’s oldest kitchen cabinet brand with worldwide headquarters located in Herford, Germany.
